Rachel’s Story

“For me the domestic abuse was not my partner, it was my mother. She verbally, emotionally and financially abused be as she would insist I worked in her business but she refused to pay my wages. I wanted to get my own home but I was not sure how to do so, so that’s when I contacted Women’s Aid.

“She verbally, emotionally and financially abused be as she would insist I worked in her business but she refused to pay my wages”

Through working with a support worker we designed a support plan together to help me escape my abuse. I was able to attend helpful and engaging programs such as the Freedom Program and my support worker put me in touch with both a counsellor and a mental health worker. My support worker helped me get my own tenancy away from the abuse of my mother and she helped me settle in including support with setting up utility bills and safety planning. I was also offered longer-term support and my worker put me in touch with Hafod who supported me for a further two years.

Thanks to all the support from my worker and the rest of the organisation I am much stronger, more independent and more confident. I have been able to learn the skills to deal with the domestic abuse issues I faced and I’ve been able to maintain my tenancy and to take control back in my life.”
