Domestic abuse figures and sex crimes on the rise in CPS cases

New reports have found almost 20% of all cases pursued by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) relate to domestic abuse or sex crimes – a decade ago figures were less than 10%.

However, although the number of cases pursued by the CPS have increased the number of referrals from police officers to the CPS have decreased, which Katie Ghose says is worrying:

“Although there has been a significant increase in police recording offences as domestic abuse-related, it is worrying that the volume of referrals from the police to the CPS has decreased yet again”

There has been over 309 alleged offences of coercive behaviour since 2015. The CPS has produced their 10th report on Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) and the full statistics are available there.
